Mortality Measures

Mortality measures report the number of deaths in an individual hospital for certain medical conditions. Mortality can vary by individual hospital, and high death rates for certain medical conditions have been shown to be associated with poorer quality of care.

These mortality measures are risk-adjusted for certain confounding variables. Certain confounding variables, such as age or sex, can influence or further increase the likelihood of death following a certain procedure. Risk-adjustment means that certain confounding variables are taken into consideration when calculating a mortality rate. Colorado hospitals are submitting data for the following mortality measures:
