Pediatric Respiratory Illnesses Inpatient Volume Measure

The pediatric respiratory illness inpatient volume measure is reporting on the total number of admissions to a hospital for respiratory illnesses. This measure does not include hospital admissions related to asthma (this information can be found in the Pediatric Asthma Inpatient Volume Measure). Examples of respiratory illnesses include:

  • Bronchiolitis - an inflammation of the bronchioles (small passages in the lungs) usually caused by a viral infection

  • Croup - causes difficulty breathing due to swelling around the vocal cords and is accompanied by a "barking" cough

  • Influenza (flu) - a respiratory infection caused by a number of viruses

  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) - causes mild, cold-like symptoms in adults and older children
